Will i be deemed unfit to teach if I have been treated for an eating disorder?

I have been accepted on to a PGCE and have to fill out a medical questionnaire. 8 years ago i received treatment for a suspected eating disorder but was soon dismissed as it was not serious and treated. Will this impact my application?

Only if your eating disorder involved eating children.
Reply:I am absolutely sure it will have no effect on your eligibility for the course in the slightest. The fact that you were treated and no longer in need of treatment is self-evidently just a matter of medical record, as if you broke your leg or something similar. In fact I might even consider omitting the details altogether.





Remember that equal opportunities is a very real aspiration for teacher training (in the UK at least) and as a educational institution they are, would you believe, particularly looking for anything that might be considered outside of the norm to hold up as an example of them apply the legislation correctly. Hard to believe but there are quotas to be filled. Along with ethnic minomities quotas.





In fact it is a double-edged sword so if you are rejected on this almost irrelevant medical condition on your record, you could appeal with full justification.





Essentially I see no problem and I would just fill it out and prepare for the course. It will be a great journey for you.





Having taught in 5 separate schools in London, UK and visited countless others, an eating disorder would be considered a total non-event.





Teaching is a very demanding and stressful occupation, in some circumstances, and I have seen many different responses and medical symptoms, as a result of teaching, which have caused individual teachers to suffer far worse than that.





Remember that teachers' are in great demand and I cannot possibly imagine that they would withdraw your acceptance based on this trivial medical record.

Reply:I do not think it will impact your career as a teacher however, I do encourage you to be honest and truthful about any situations such as this one. The industry for education is ever changing and it is important that you be up front. Believe me - your knowledge and experiences will be a firm foundation in the classroom when you are teaching. Thank God you overcame and have a testimony which might encourage and help some young person down the road. Be blessed.
Reply:Most prospective employers are only interested in your recent medical history as in the last 3 years. So don't worry about it. 90% of people suffer from one medical issue or another anyway. They would have to count an awful lot of people out xx

The teachers at my sons school all seem to have something wrong with them.





3 are in re-hab


1 is"depressed"


2 are raving alchololics


2 are always away through"stress"
Reply:No. And, it does give you a possible answer to that interview question "Tell us about a difficult situation you have dealt with - and what did you learn from it?"
Reply:I don't think it would make you unfit to teach. I think they are usually worried about past problems that could put their students in jeopardy. An eating disorder is an illness against yourself, not others.
Reply:I really do not believe that it will. If it is brought up (which likely it should not even be known by the interviewer) address it honestly and move forward. I doubt it will be even brought up.

Reply:it shouldn't do. They are not allowed to discriminate again anyone who has had any form of mental illness.
