Why is it important to teach elementry school students how to read?

I'm doing a paper for school on "Teaching of Reading"

Above is one of my questions, I would just like to know everyone’s opinion. Its kind of like a questionnaire that I'd like to use as part of my essay.

Why is it important to teach elementry school students how to read?

This is a wonderful site to use as a resource for your paper. It goes into detail about the importance of teaching reading and its benefits in children.

There are lots of reasons for teaching reading to young children and the importance of reading out loud to children.
Reply:One of the reasons is that it is the crucial foundation of their life-long education, that is, the first of the three R's since a hundred years ago in most countries.

Reading maketh a full man,

Conference a ready man,

And writing an exact man.

-Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626)
Reply:Reading is the foundation for learning. Without good reading skills, a student will struggle with their work, since they will not be able to comprehend what they are reading.
Reply:The Most important thing to learn is how to read. It cant be stressed enough. If a child can read well he/she can learn everything else and will be able to participate in the democracy as an informed citizen; find a good job; learn new things over a lifetime; and enjoy the world of books.
Reply:Depends on what grade your teaching, but yeah, learning to read is very important. That, writing, and basic math are the most important things in 1st grade. You learn stuff like multiplication, division and cursive in second grade, etc. I learned to read in kindergarden, so I got to reading the harry potter books in first grade. Most little kids should be able to do that. At least in my school.
Reply:cuz see if i didnt get taught how to read then like how would i be able to answer this question????????
Reply:Children who read well do better in other subjects and in all aspects of schooling and beyond. As the world becomes more complex, reading is increasingly important for children trying to find their place in it.
