How to get sexual orientation on the Census questionnaire?

I emailed the Customer Service Center at the Census Bureau asking what would be the procedure to add Sexual Orientation in the demographics section (alongside race, sex, age, marital status) of the Census questionaire.

Robert Clair of the Census Bureau replied to me that it won't ever happen because "behavioral or preference issues are not really the domain or purpose of the decennial census program."

He suggested I write to my Congressional representatives and to the US Office of Management and Budget.

Wow. Sexual orientation is not included because the Census Bureau considers being homo a choice.

Any ideas of what to do in addition to contacting the Senators and Reps and the US Office of Management and Budget?

I think that's a great idea. Good luck. Check with LAMBDA Legal
Reply:lol oh god.
Reply:Well, I'd have to disagree, it does affect demographics, duh to the stupid Census Bureau man. Get more people to contact this Mr. Clair, maybe they will consider it. Basically he said whatever he had to get you to shut up (Quite frankly, the government doesn't care about "we the people" --shocking--) More people contacting him would make a difference.
Reply:I think they shouldn't include it. Its my business whether I like girls or not.
Reply:Actually. That's NOT a bad idea.

And Mr. Census man is kinda naive if he thinks it doesn't matter in census reports. It COULD have an impact on declining population rates, considering most homosexuals 1) dont register as "married", and 2) don't produce children. This has a definite impact on other demographic categories. Like "single". Well..perhaps a homosexual person isn't "single" but that's their only option on a census form. It would provide for more accurate representation.

I would definitely support you in finding out how to change this. This IS actually important.
